You are buying ONE (1) only of Forty (40”) inch long Mullite or Porcelainite tube piping refractory. It is in very good condition being NOS (New Old Stock). There are some edge chips at one end of the tube that will not effect the performance of this component. It is an Alumino-Silicate material made primarily from high purity Mullite mineral typically 99% or better. The chemical formula is 3Al
2
O
3
•2SiO
2
indicating that is three parts Aluminum Oxide (Al
2
O
3
) which of course is Alumina and two parts Silicon Dioxide (SiO
2
) which is Silica from an atomic molar perspective.
Mullite is an excellent structural material due to its high temperature stability, strength and creep resistance. It has a low dielectric constant and high electrical insulation capabilities. Typical applications include kiln furniture, furnace center tubes, heat exchange parts, heat insulation parts and rollers. However they are relatively flat. There may also be “firing” color variations inherent in the material. The thermal shock resistance is not very high so exercise rule of thumb caution. “The larger the piece of material the slower the rate of temperature increase should be applied to the piece.” Heat up slowly to avoid cracking in use.
