ROSENTHAL 1992 Christmas Plate
St. Nicholas Church, Leipzig
is the subject of this 1992 Rosenthal Christmas Plate, the 19th plate in the Rosenthal Christmas “Classic Rose” series which began in 1974 as a continuation of the Rosenthal “Traditional Christmas” series which began in 1910.  .  Multi-color underglaze design on white porcelain, diameter approximately 8.5 inches (22 cm). Pierced foot for hanging wire. Inscription (in gold): WEIHNACHTEN (German  for Christmas) 1992. Artwork (Entwurf) by Helmut Drexler.
St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig (also known as St. Nicholas’s City) was built about 1165 and has undergone several major expansions and restorations.  The annual Leipzig Christmas Market, one of the most beautiful in Germany, features 250 stalls set up in the Market Square in front of St. Nicholas Church.
St. Nicholas church is perhaps most famous as being the setting for the Monday evening demonstrations that began there on September 4, 1989.  By mid-October, the demonstrators had swelled from a few hundred to 300,000 (in a city of just 500,000) and had sparked similar Monday evening demonstrations in other cities, including Berlin.  These led directly to the fall of the Berlin Wall in November, 1989 and the subsequent fall of the Communist East German government, paving the way for the German reunification in 1990.
