A Hard Day's Night, the Beatles signature film, was a British production, and so finding rare British country of origin paper on the title has always been at the top of all the advanced Beatles and movie poster collecting aficionados want lists. I've been collecting the Beatles film posters for over forty years now, and I can say without qualification - this poster takes the prize for the most special! It documents and defines the start of "Mop Top" fascination and marks the beginning of the Beatles cinematic sensation. I love that this poster is a contest poster - the prize being the VERY FIRST TICKETS TO THE VERY FIRST PERFORMANCE. Well-done United Artists!
The studio sent this little gem to few lucky theaters, witnessed by the fact that almost NO other originals have ever surfaced on the collector's market. Needless to say, this poster got almost NO original 1964 distribution. It was only printed ONCE and never issued again. It measures 10x15 inches and was originally folded by the cinema it came from. It's been stored FLAT for many decades, and so the folds are not a big issue. Check out the DIRECT HIGH-RESOLUTION SCANS I've posted on eBay. They leave NOTHING to the imagination. I've personally decided to leave it in its original state. It has no touchup or restoration. Decades ago, brown non-damaging (
non
sticky adhesive) paper tape was put on the back to protect the card from be refolded. Again, I've decided to leave it as it is, despite the fact the tape can easily be removed. I suppose a conservator could flatten it even better by putting it in a press, but I like it as is. The new owner can make that decision for himself or herself. The poster is printed on thick stock, similar to a window card. This was probably designed to be a window card, or a display for the theater lobby. Nevertheless, it's one rockin piece from the height of the rock and roll craze refueled by The Beatles breakout in 1964!
This is definitely an item for the the most advanced Beatles collector!
